Percival Petal, Gnome of Springtime

Percival Petal was inspired by all the flowers in my Spring garden. It is the most exciting time.

Percival the flower gnome, includes many different fibres to create a textured hat.

His face is wrinkly and finished off with green, glass eyes.

Here is Percival's story. You can find the story of other gnomes on in my blog.

In a quiet spot by an old brick wall near the English gardens of Windhill, Percival Petal lived. His tall pink and blue hat curled at the tip. It swayed with each light step he took among the waking leaves. His white wool beard flowed in soft curls down his chest. It caught the morning dew that sparkled in the spring sunshine.

Percival emerged from his stone nook, eyes twinkling with anticipation. Spring was his season. The world burst with bright colours and scents. Only the most observant creatures could truly enjoy them.

Each morning, the hat trembled with excitement as Percival got ready for his daily rounds. It had been crafted specifically for its purpose: to sense the readiness of petals about to fall. The curled tip of the hat would twitch when close to a flower on the verge of releasing its first petal. It was like a magical sign of the flower’s surrender.

"Ready for today's dance, old friend?" Percival whispered as he adjusted the hat upon his head. The hat straightened, its colours brightening vividly against Percival's white curly beard.

As Percival moved through the garden, the hat led the way. The hat swayed towards a cherry blossom ready to show its first pink blooms. It also nodded at a tulip, whose outer petals had fallen off overnight. The gnome followed the directions carefully so he would meet the petal where it would fall.

The garden creatures watched in awe as the strange pair danced among the flowers. Birds stopped singing to watch the hat dip low. This made Percival's white beard graze the ground, as a petal fell from its flower. Mice peeked from their burrows. The hat's tip mesmerised them, twirling in tight circles when it got excited about a perfect petal.

By midday, the hat had developed a subtle fragrance—a blend of all the flowers whose petals it had helped collect. This scent would attract bees and butterflies. They sometimes mistook the hat for a new flower species. They would land on its woollen surface for a short moment before realising their mistake.

At sunset, Percival would return to his spot in the garden wall. The hat's colours would fade a bit, worn out from the day's work. The gnome would gently take it off and place it on a special mushroom cap stand. There, it could rest overnight and soak up moonlight to renew its magic.

"Well done today," Percival would murmur to the hat as its tip drooped in sleepy contentment. "Tomorrow brings new petals and new dances."
